Giving birth is just the beginning.

New parents need lots of encouragement, help and support. It takes a village, but what if your village lives far away, isn't available, or doesn't know how to help with a new baby? A postpartum doula is a valuable addition to your village and adjustment to parenting one, two, or more.

Postpartum doulas are more than people who take care of your baby while you take a nap, grab a shower, or finally finish the coffee that you forgot in the microwave. Those early days of adding a new baby (or two) to your life can feel big and overwhelming, and often the focus has shifted from the pregnant mother to the new baby. In addition to being well-versed in newborns and infant care, postpartum doulas look at the whole family to make sure that everyone is getting the help and care they need. We can fill in where there are gaps in support from your family and friends, or we can work alongside them if you need an extra pair of hands that's just for you.

How does a postpartum doula help?

Babies aren't easy, but we help make things easier. We're a walking baby book for when you're wondering, "Is this normal?" We're encouragers who build you up and help you gain confidence as a parent. We listen with empathy and can help things feel a little less lonely. We do practical things, too, like:

  • Feeding— help with breastfeeding, formula feeding, pumping, bottle feeding
  • Help with household tasks
  • Newborn 101- we have knowledge about all things baby and can help you learn the ropes
  • Meal preparation
  • Running errands
  • Helping siblings adjust
  • Baby care while you sleep, shower, or care for yourself
  • Time alone to reconnect with your partner
  • Overnight care
  • Continuity of care- All of our doulas are well-versed in normal postpartum recovery
  • Referrals — pediatricians, local groups, maternal mental health

This sounds wonderful, but how does it work? Can I book a doula while I'm pregnant?

When you contact us, we talk with you and figure out what your specific needs are, and then we place you with a doula when you are ready to schedule your care. We prioritize early bookings and cannot always guarantee last minute availability, so we recommend booking your postpartum care as soon as possible!

We understand that some families are apprehensive about trusting a stranger with their baby and home- when you hire Doulas of Memphis, you can be certain that you are getting someone who is experienced and knowledgeable about newborns, babies, and the postpartum period.  All of our affiliated postpartum doulas are hand-selected by us to work with your family, professionally trained, and CPR certified.

Prices from $27-29/hr based on package purchased. Choose one of our standard options or ask us about a custom package.
